Hace tiempo que sabemos que una práctica de deporte puede reducir el riesgo de enfermedades como la diabetes o las del corazón ( aunque no conocíamos exactamente por qué), junto con una nutrición equilibrada.  La explicación, según investigaciones recientes, podría hallarse en el ADN. Aunque el código genético de una persona permanece inalterable desde que nace hasta que muere, el funcionamiento de los genes sí puede cambiar, principalmente, a través de un proceso conocido como «metilación del ADN». Ahora sabemos que los patrones de metilación pueden cambiar en respuesta al estilo de vida. Llevar una dieta inadecuada o exponerse a sustancias contaminantes, por ejemplo, puede cambiar los patrones de metilación en algunos genes de nuestro ADN y aumentar el riesgo de padecer enfermedades. Por otra parte, se ha demostrado que, tras practicar ejercicio, el ADN del músculo esquelético de la persona contiene una cantidad menor de grupos metilo adheridos a sus moléculas que antes de la práctica.

El deporte, además, tiene enormes beneficios sobre nuestras neuronas. Cada vez que ejercitamos nuestros músculos, estamos enviando una serie de sustancias químicas al cerebro. Entre ellas, la IGF-1, que cuando llega al cerebro se adueña, por decirlo de alguna manera, del resto, y su actividad impacta directamente en el llamado «factor neurotrófico derivado del cerebro» (BDNF). Se trata de una proteína que, aparte de ser un factor de crecimiento, actúa como un neurotransmisor, es decir, ayuda a las células a comunicarse entre ellas.

El BDNF está implícito en casi todas las actividades que conducen a un pensamiento complejo. Si bloqueamos el BDNF, bloqueamos el proceso de aprendizaje y memoria, según se ha podido demostrar en modelos de animales. De ahí que enfermedades como el Alzheimer, no practicar ejercicio se considere un factor de riesgo. La deficiencia de actividad física se relaciona, no solo con enfermedades neurodegenerativas, sino con transtornos anímicos como la depresión.

Ejercicios idóneos.

No estamos hablando de aumentar el tamaño de nuestros músculos a base de hacer pesas en el gimnasio. Al contrario: los ejercisios aeróbicos, como correr, nadar o jugar a fútbol, en los que se usa la coordinación y el pensamiento, son los más importantes para el cuidado de nuestro cerebro.
